Helicopter Maintenance Tips Critical to Flight Safety

Jun 28, 2017, 15:39 PM by Kalyn Kvapil

With the approaching
ALEA Expo 2017 in Reno, Nevada, July 24-29, there is no better time to review how proper helicopter maintenance is critical to flight safety. So before we gather with the airborne law enforcement community for this six-day event, that will include the best courses, classes, and exhibitors in our industry, let's prep for our arrival with some valuable information, concerning the number one priority of any helicopter mission — safety.

Every crew member plays a role in the overall well-being of a flight by calling out signs of danger and practicing safe habits. Proper operation, regular maintenance and training will help avoid problems in the field. And according to the NTSB’s investigative knowledge, it is largely the maintenance personnel who contribute to the safety of any helicopter operation.

Some tips compiled by the NTSB suggest what mechanics can do to help prevent accidents, in addition to receiving the proper training, include:

  • Verify all work performed is in agreement with manufacturers’ procedures
  • Employ work cards to log completed maintenance steps
  • Attain independent inspections of critical items
  • Collaborate with flight check pilots to confirm that all tasks are completed
  • Study available guidance and training materials regarding human performance errors, such as missed procedures due to stress or fatigue

It is also a good idea, even if not requested by regulatory requirements, to have a skilled person, other than the specialist who completed the repairs, inspect the safety and security of the work.

From recording engine power assurance checks to following standard practices for replacement of self-locking nuts, proper and timely rotorcraft maintenance can be the key to avoiding common accidents. You want to ensure your service is performed by OEM-authorized and trained technicians that have the necessary experience and required knowledge about your specific engine platform. Having an expert resource standing by for your routine and unplanned maintenance event can help mitigate risks and provide peace of mind.

Which is why the rotorcraft specialists at Dallas Airmotive and H+S Aviation follow standard protocol set by OEMs and are the qualified engine experts to ensure your engines are working at optimal performance. Dallas Airmotive and H+S Aviation are unique, in that engines is all we do. Our mission is to protect your engine, enhance its performance through regular maintenance and overhaul, and ultimately get your fleet back in the air faster – after a successful engine test, of course.
